Don't Rush

I’m going to start off with a recap of last weekend. What an action-packed event! Submission Hunter Pro 63 definitely did not disappoint. The commentary from Professor Mike Torres and his wife Maggie Torres was excellent as always. Can’t wait for the next show!

My match went pretty much how I had planned it to go. I had a very tough opponent that I knew was going to be a challenge for me. Jacob Miller being a very technical wrestler as well as a legit jiu-jitsu player was able to threaten me with a Von Flue choke early in the match. I weathered this storm and was able to get back to my feet, which was the game plan from the beginning. After a couple of tie up exchanges, I was able to counter one of his double leg takedowns and secure the guillotine finish. Sure would be cool for my next match to be for the 145 lb No-Gi purple belt title *Wink Wink Mr.Garcia*.

Anyways, on to the topic of today’s article, rushing the growth. One of my teammates was telling me the other day that he just wishes he could have super-fights and get in the cage already. He has been training about six months now and is getting frustrated over a smaller guy that has only been training for a couple months. I explained it to him like this:

Our Jiu Jitsu journey is you vs. you, not you vs. your teammates. we all progress at different rates, we all have different obstacles along this journey that others might not share. A person fortunate enough to train all day and not have to work will progress faster than the guy that works 8-10 hours a day and trains in the evenings only. If you get stuck in this you vs. your teammates mentality it will hinder your growth on the mats, it can also make you a bad teammate. We aren’t here to compete against each other, that’s what competition is for. We are here to help one another through this journey. But most importantly, this is a marathon not a sprint. There are no shortcuts. Just show up, shut up, and learn.

I try not to get too philosophical with mat chats, but occasionally, I’ll go on a rant that turns into a philosophy of jiu-jitsu class.

I have been very busy camping and training for this last match and it has taken away from my writing, I apologize for that. I am going to be doing some back to back interviews for you guys over the next few weeks covering various topics that I think you guys will really enjoy. I have contacted a sheriff that is also a high rank Jiu Jitsu practitioner, he is willing to anonymously answer some questions for me. That should be a lot of fun to write, stay tuned!
